My 'Light Bulb Moment' and why I Believe in Gender Roles

Updated: Jul 30

My mother is a Teacher and she says I'm a visual learner. I generally do well with things like reading a diagram and fitting stuff. Heck, sometimes I don't even need a diagram. But ever so often, I am reminded that I am just a woman and I have limitations in this regard. In an ideal situation, I rather a male handle certain things. I'm a modern and independent woman who believes in gender roles. No, I am not on the "I don't need a man" wagon.

I live with my son and this has forced me to become quite resourceful around the home. I love a nicely put together home and an essential aspect is lighting fixtures like sconces and ceiling fans. About 9 or 10 years ago, I bought some lighting fixtures at Active Traders in Kingston. These included two ceiling fans which carry triple lights. At the time, the sales person and I selected some cute little bulbs. They're not very bright but they're cute. Bad idea! I need to see my way around here. Still, I have always returned to Active Traders to buy the same bulbs.

Recently, a couple of the bulbs in both fans went out. I was really not in the mood for a trip all the way to Constant Spring for bulbs! Furthermore, me inside Active Traders is not safe. Things will escalate real quick! Suffice to say, I made a full on project about sourcing brighter little bulbs for weeks! Unfortunately, overthinking is a thing sometimes and I'm good at it. My search took me to Amazon. Then I changed my mind and said I'll check other stores in closer proximity, like Hi-Pro Ace, Rapid True Value. Surely, they must have them! But time hasn't permitted a trip to those stores.

Tired of the near darkness, in these rooms, I had a real 'light bulb moment' yesterday. What if a regular sized bulb could fit?! I ran to a drawer and found one and it fit like a glove. It has taken me nearly 10 years to realise this! OMG! See now, perhaps a man would have known. I will now add to my list of requirements that he must be able to figure out light bulbs. Lol! I love a masculine man who can get certain things done.

There's a third fan which does in fact require a special sized bulb because it is covered. But not these two. Whew!

Today I stopped at Lin Tian Mart and picked up some regular-sized bulbs. Problem solved! Well, half the problem...because now the gentleman who is tall enough to reach the ceiling fan in my bedroom will be here soon, because I can't get up there. Surely, I could buy a step ladder, but not yet. The 'damsel in distress' bit is kinda cute. :)

Like I said, I believe in gender roles. In a world where some women have pretty much discarded men, I'm not done with them. Men need women and women need men. I'll play my role and you play yours. I'll get into that some other time. In the meantime, I'm off to enjoy the new found brightness of my living room. :)

I am Suzette Campbell
